The Florida Keys are rich with wildlife diversity. We feel that an integral component of experiencing the Keys is getting out of the bars and into the back country. The back country is what locals call the collection of sea grass beds and mangrove islands to the north and west of Key West, an area that is alive with birds, turtles, dolphins and other wildlife.

Our world here in the Keys is made up of mostly water and has very minimal land, and  mangrove islands supplement that land, extending the non-water habitats for animals and actually growing our islands over time. Growing directly out of shallow water, mangrove roots shelter schools of snapper and other fish while their branches house and protect hundreds of bird species: including cormorants, frigate birds, ospreys, pelicans, different types of herons and over 200 migratory birds. The birds build nests in the mangroves, as well as hunt from them, taking advantage of the fish gathered in the roots. Mangroves are very dense and nearly impossible to explore on foot, but narrow, green-sided ocean channels wind through the islands and are accessible by boat with one of our local captains. In addition to all the bird life, from the boat we also often see juvenile nurse sharks basking in the channels, as well as conch and the occasional horseshoe crab. Exploring these life-filled green tunnels is an essential Florida Keys experience, and we are happy to show you our favorite hidden spots and share knowledge on the importance of the wild mangrove islands to our ecosystems.
